JOCKEY PROFILE
Algernon Anthony first rode in the Irish Derby in 1897 when unplaced on Cashmere behind Wales. He was unplaced again in 1898 on The Ruler when beaten by Noble Howard. However, he finally won the Irish Derby on Oppressor (SR 2018) in 1899 and, two years later, won again on Carrigavalla. He also rode Ambush II to victory in the 1900 Aintree Grand National when riding for Edward, Prince of Wales. Once he hung up his riding boots he became a trainer at Westenra and is buried in the grounds of Kildare Cathedral.
